GEARS OF QUALITY
It’s no real secret that I’m a gear junkie. It doesn’t matter whether the gear is tech related or sports related, I like it all, and always find time to read up on the latest and greatest. However, I’d like to clarify, that although the gear that I admire and aspire to acquire … hehe, I like how that rolls off your tongue … tends to be the latest and greatest of cool gear, the real reason why I end up owning it is quality.
Although coolness is a factor, the deciding factor is quality
And all the gear we currently own have a decent amount of quality in them (except the X360’s overheating chip). Which is a good thing because Harp has yet to say to me “that thing was just a waste of money.” And won’t say that about the X360, because that would be very Judas-like … she works for MS … hee hee.
If you can mine all the quality out of the gear, than get the gear
So, then there’s the measure you take. How much of the quality in the item are you going to be able exploit or mine? As far as tech gear is concerned, there’s no question I mine (push?) all the quality out of the gear I have.
But sometimes I know there’s gear I want, but the price point just ain’t matching the thickness of the wallet. So, that gear just has to wait, inevitably being replaced by better and newer gear … thus creating a vicious cycle of desiring gear you can never really get. Heh.
Basically, though, when it comes to tech gear. I buy and squeeze all the quality out of it I can get.
The TaylorMade r7 3-PW iron set can be had on Ebay for just under half the price you can get it for, from the local golf shops … not like they’re going to help my game much.
Then there’s sports gear. This is a little different because the gear with the highest quality isn’t really going to return the full performance it would to a pro. Take golf clubs for instance. A $1500 set of Rapture Ping irons isn’t going to make me a scratch golfer. In fact, I doubt seriously they would even shave 4-5 strokes off my game.
Spending time on my swing, instead of money from the wallet would help that. Maybe a set of lesser quality would suffice.
How about the latest and greatest road bike, complete with carbon frame, Zipp 404 tubular wheels, and full DuraAce component groupy? One would be convinced they would ride faster, even uphill. I suppose the lesser overall weight of the bike would justify such a claim. And no doubt there would be a slight increase in riding comfort.
The pros ride these elite bikes, but to pull the most quality out of the bike possible they do so at their peak fitness and lowest weight. Now, there’s no doubt the comfort would be better, but if one were looking to ride faster. I’d say try shedding a few pounds.
After all, wind has a much easier time flowing around smaller objects than bigger ones.
Look, there is some method to my madness of looking at and buying gear…
I guess all I’m trying to say is I like gear and although coolness plays an important part it’s hardly the deciding part. There’s a lot of thought that goes into purchasing gear. With the paramount of the thought being put on quality.
And the family has become aware of this … always passing by their thoughts on gear looking for the “nuvAE’s seal of approval” …

Kingdom Of Heaven: The story of Balian’s quest for redemption and his battles against those who seek power in it’s name. This is an excellent movie whose message is perhaps more important today than it was then.
Dawkins tackles it all in his no holds barred approach to whether God exists. The stance? The probability of it? Very unlikely.
"Hopes and Fears” and “Under The Iron Sea” by Keane get constant play from my iTunes. Find out why their music is so good. After all they were the band that inspired Coldplay.
As Marcus Fenix, you fight a war against the immense Locust Horde, which not only out powers but outnumbers you, your squad, and the entire force of the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Time to pull out the stops in a game that delivers the next-generation in tactical combat systems in Gears of War.
