HIS FIRST DAY

Dropping The Little Man off for his first day of school was an experience I don’t think I’ll ever forget. It’s almost like these are the moments that earn you your next set of stripes into parenthood.

Watching your child off for his first day of school made me feel like a newbie parent all over again. Unlike most of the boys there, The Little Man took to his first day of Junior Kindergarten without a single hitch.

He’d been looking forward to this day for a long time, but there’s a good reason for him not being scared. We’ve been sending him to Oxford Learning Center for several years now, and I have to say, it has done wonders for his confidence.

We stood just outside the gate with the other parents and children and waited for the teachers to come out and collect their kids. Taaj’s teacher was Mrs. Taylor. He’d met her several days before when he went with Harp for an orientation.

He couldn’t find her in the playground and became worried that his teacher wasn’t here to take him. Heh, that gave me a chuckle. While other kids were clinging to their parents dreading their teachers to come and get them, The Little Man was expressing concern that his might not do what the other kids were probably hoping for … hehe.

When Mrs. Taylor and the other teachers finally did come to collect the kids, they escorted them all into the fenced off playground. The parents were not allowed to follow. Many, myself included, had cameras at the ready and were snapping shots at will.

The girls were fine, but it was the boys that were amusing to say the least. I’d say 25-30 of them left their parents screaming with tears streaming down their cheeks.

You have to wonder what it says about the boys of this generation when practically a third of them are crying, the other third are standing in the playground all by themselves, and the final third are just trying to make sense of it all … The Little Man clearly fell into this bracket.

And all the while, not a single girl cried or expressed emotional distress. I guess they save that for when they grow up … (tee hee, I kid I kid). In fact many were already making friends and were busy volunteering help for the teachers. But the whole scene appearing comical, was putting it mildly.

The Little Man took to his first day of school with no problems at all. I’m looking at him now as I type this. Watching him as he packs and puts away his backpack for tomorrow. Then I look over at his sister, Tiia, getting ready to pounce on him….

Uh oh … here we go

CURRENTLY

  • Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom Of Heaven: The story of Balian’s quest for redemption and his battles against those who seek power in it’s name. This is an excellent movie whose message is perhaps more important today than it was then.

  • The God Delusion : Richard Dawkins

Dawkins tackles it all in his no holds barred approach to whether God exists. The stance? The probability of it? Very unlikely.

  • Hopes and Fears : Keane

"Hopes and Fears” and “Under The Iron Sea” by Keane get constant play from my iTunes. Find out why their music is so good. After all they were the band that inspired Coldplay.

  • Gears Of War

As Marcus Fenix, you fight a war against the immense Locust Horde, which not only out powers but outnumbers you, your squad, and the entire force of the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Time to pull out the stops in a game that delivers the next-generation in tactical combat systems in Gears of War.
