THE SORTIE

Yesterday morning I went on scouting mission. Some of you may think this to be a geeky thing, but for someone who has never worked in downtown Toronto, I’m thinking it would’ve been silly if I hadn’t done it.

What was the mission? Well, it was basically a walk-a-bout. I got up early … heh, still later than I normally get up to workout, but it was on off day on the training front … and head to the GO station to catch one of the morning trains into Toronto’s Union Station.

When I got to the ticket kiosk, I bought to-and-from tickets for the remainder of the business days left to September and then bought a monthly pass for October. All set for GO commuting.

The train was a decent enough commute. I’m sure it’ll become old hat soon enough. It arrived at Union Station in 45 minutes. I got off and got ready for the walk to the office where I’ll be working. There are many ways to walk around in the downtown core, with the two of the options being above ground in the open air or underground.

I decided to walk outside since it was a nice day. All told, it took about 20 minutes to get to the office from Union Station. So, the overall commute, once the train left would be around 65 minutes, give or take a few. And noted for reference.

Funny thing was I met Ameet while he was heading in to the office to start his day. Heh, it was curious moment telling him what I was doing and yes. We spoke briefly, and said we’d see each other on Monday before parting ways.

With the first GO train ride back home still over two hours away. I decided to time the streetcars, but first I wanted to make sure the fare was still $2.75. I walked to a local convenience store, bought a Kit Kat, and confirmed the fare with the clerk.

The ride took ten minutes less than the walk, but there was a wait for a transfer. I’m thinking taking the express streetcar, when coming into work, will save about 15 minutes if needed. Despite that, the walk will be good exercise, and a very good way to work out the toxin buildup from the morning training sessions.

Once back at Union Station I still had loads of time to spare. So, I thought I’d just meander around The Path, the underground concourse that spans most of Toronto’s downtown core.

You have to be careful down there. There’s so much eye candy down there, you can easily get distracted and if you don’t keep your bearings about you, you could even get lost. Heh, crazy place, but as long as you keep reading the signs or make a point of having one of these on you, you’ll be fine.

Couple of things I’ve noted:

I’m going to really like working down here. There’s too much going on around you not to enjoy it.

Hanging with Ameet again is going to be fun.

I’m going to have a camera around with me a lot more. There’s too much going on that just demands to be captured in a shot.

I’m going to need a far better backpack to lug my laptop, lunch, and other knick-knacks around. One that wont bend my back out of shape.

I’ll have to be very conscious about getting home. If I miss that 5.45pm train, the next one won’t have me home until after 8.00pm. That means a significant hit on the time with Harp, Taaj, and Tiia.

In light of that, I’m going to have to be productive while riding the GO. That’s an extra hour and a half of time to get things done for work or otherwise.

Change is good … wink

Kingdom Of Heaven: The story of Balian’s quest for redemption and his battles against those who seek power in it’s name. This is an excellent movie whose message is perhaps more important today than it was then.

  • The God Delusion : Richard Dawkins

Dawkins tackles it all in his no holds barred approach to whether God exists. The stance? The probability of it? Very unlikely.

  • Hopes and Fears : Keane

"Hopes and Fears” and “Under The Iron Sea” by Keane get constant play from my iTunes. Find out why their music is so good. After all they were the band that inspired Coldplay.
