MAIN STREET
I’d been reading up on night time photography for some time now. Not so much in books or magazines, but online. There are some great tips out there.
Saturday night had me fooling around with the camera again. I had actually wanted to get out and drive up north for a bit. Buy Harp a coffee, give The Little Man his milk so he’d fall asleep in the back, and a nice warm night drive, listening to “Pink Moon” by Nick Drake.
I had this idea of finding a curve in the road and setting up a tripod on the side and as cars would pass by I would fire off a long exposure shot. Creating the effect of streaked tail lights across the frame of the picture.
As it turned out, the experiment would have to wait. Instead, I set the tripod up in the kitchen of our condo and fired off test shots with the same idea. This one came out the best as far as the streaks created by the cars is concerned.
I didn’t know what aperture I was looking to set for the shot. Or, for how long I should let the shutter open for. I just experimented until the LCD on the camera showed something I liked. Eventually, I decided on f/16 for the aperture because I wanted a fair amount of detail and great depth of field, but then again, from where I was shooting from, I don’t think it mattered.
After that it was just a matter of taking shots at different shutter speeds. 20 seconds seemed to work well.
I like this kind of photography and with the days as long as they are now, I’m going to have to take advantage of the limited twilight situations.
